Artist Statement

Marion Landry is interested in the formal properties of painting and how through the manipulation of pattern, surface, color and light a painting can perform a mapping of reality. Landry’s motivation is to work with perception. By examining the principles of Op Art the illusion of depth in space is further confused by overlapping layers of transparent colour applied tone on tone.  Recently, she has been moving away from high contrast colour schemes to a more natural earth tone, which sets her further apart from the bold forms of her predecessors. Her process does not involve any masking or cut outs. Instead she traces the geometrical pattern first with a colour pencil, which is later painted free hand. She enjoys painting freely within the boundaries of the shapes. Landry’s focus is to examine the optics of painting on the surface of the canvas.
